Images in your articles

Where the images and diagrams in your articles come from, how to set their style, and how to add your own screenshots where the AI asks for them.

The AI writer illustrates every article with a featured image at the top, plus images and diagrams inside the sections. You decide what those images look like and where they may come from. Where an article needs a real picture of your product, it uses one of your own screenshots instead of inventing one.

Where the images come from

Source Used for
Generated images Illustrations for the featured image and sections, in the style you choose. Each one takes its colours from what it shows, not from your brand colour. The featured image is always one scene or visual idea for the article, never a diagram.
Diagrams Processes, comparisons and charts. Each one is designed for its section from what the section says, so labels are real text and numbers come from the article.
Stock photos Real-world photos of people, places and things. Never your product.
Your own images Screenshots and photos you upload to your Knowledge Base or to an article.

The AI never fakes your product

When an article needs to show your product, for example a screen of your app or a photo of what you sell, the writer looks for a real image among your Knowledge Base images. If none fits, it never generates a lookalike. It leaves an Image needed slot that describes exactly what to add:

An Image needed slot in an article describing the screenshot the writer wants, with Add image and Remove buttons

Click Add image to upload or pick the right picture, or Remove if you'd rather do without. An article can't be published while it still has an empty slot, and the article list marks it Add images.

In auto-articles, what happens next depends on the publishing behaviour. Fully automatic uses a stock photo or a clearly illustrative image in that spot. Auto-publish when ready and Review everything hold the article until you add the image.

Tip: Upload your screenshots and product photos once, in Knowledge Base → Images. Each one is described automatically so the writer can find it and put it where a real image is needed. See Teach the AI about your business.

Set the image style

Go to Settings → your publication → Images.

The Images settings of a blog: styles for the hero image and section images, diagrams designed for each article, accent and second colour, the logo switch and brand logo, and the image sources and logo options under Advanced
  • Hero image and Section images: click a card to choose its style. Diagrams: click the card to choose how they're made, see below.
  • Accent and Second colour: the colours of your diagrams and charts. The accent marks the one part of a diagram that matters most; the second colour is for a contrast that carries meaning, such as the other side of a comparison. Generated pictures take their colours from what they show, so your brand colour doesn't take over every image. Use brand colour and Derive it reset them.
  • Add your logo to images: puts your logo in the corner you pick. Upload the Brand logo in two versions, Light background and Dark background. The logo is shared by every publication in the project.
  • Advanced:
    • Image sources: switch Generated images, Stock photos and Decorative images off if you don't want the writer to use them at all. Diagrams are still made either way.
    • Logo Size, Margin and Opacity, and which images it goes on (Apply to): Hero images, Generated images, Diagrams and Media library. When diagrams are generated by the image model, they count as generated images.

How Apply to treats your own pictures:

  • With Media library selected, the logo goes on a copy of your media-library image when it's placed in an article. Your original stays as it is.
  • A library image used as the hero image follows Hero images instead.
  • Stock photos and one-off uploads never get the logo: they're someone else's picture, or one you added as it is.

When you're done, click Save changes in the bar at the bottom of the settings.

Styles

The hero and section image styles are:

The Hero image style picker with Automatic, seven illustration and photo styles, and Your own
  • Automatic: each article picks the style that suits it.
  • Editorial illustration, Flat vector, Isometric, Soft 3D, Line art, Editorial photography and Paper collage.
  • Your own: upload an image drawn or photographed the way you like. ProjectHQ reads its style (never its subject) and describes it in words you can edit. Give it a Name and click Save style. Your own styles then appear next to the built-in ones.

Whatever the style, a generated picture's colours come from its subject: a kitchen scene gets the colours of a kitchen, not your logo's.

Diagrams

For Diagrams you choose how they're made:

  • Designed for each article (default): the AI lays out every diagram for what its section says, with real text labels and exact numbers, in your Accent and Second colour. It picks the form that fits the content, such as a sequence, a comparison, a loop or a chart, and keeps each diagram short enough to read at a glance. Designing one takes under a minute. If a diagram doesn't come out clean, the section is left without one rather than given a weaker stand-in.
  • Generated by the image model: painted to match your illustrations, in the illustration style you pick. Slower, and labels or figures can come out wrong.

Change an image in an article

Hover over the featured image and click Replace to open the picker, or Remove. To add an image inside the article, use the image button on an empty line, or Add image in an Image needed slot.

The Featured image picker with the Generate, Stock, Upload and Library tabs, an image description, the Improve the scene switch and the Generate button
  • Generate: describe the image and click Generate. With Improve the scene for this article on, the AI improves your description using the article. Turn it off to send your words as written. Under Reference you can add an existing image (Upload, Library or Stock) for the AI to restyle.
  • Stock: search free stock photos.
  • Upload: add a PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF file. Tick Add to my media library to reuse it in other articles.
  • Library: pick an image you've uploaded before.

Click an image inside the article to set its size (Small (25%), Medium (50%), Large (75%) or Full width), align it, add a caption and edit its Alt Text. Alt text is the description screen readers and search engines use.

Generating an image can take up to a minute. It keeps going if you leave the page.

Add or change a diagram

Ask the agent in the editor, in your own words. For example, "add a diagram of the four steps in this section" or "in the diagram, rename the second step to Review". The agent designs or redraws the diagram, keeping everything you didn't ask to change, and shows it as a proposed change you can Accept or Reject. See Edit and review an article.
