Authors and bylines
Credit each article to a real author: set up your own byline, add guest authors and choose who signs automatic articles.
A byline tells readers and search engines who stands behind an article. Search engines treat a real name with relevant credentials, a short bio and links to professional profiles as a sign of expertise. ProjectHQ keeps a list of authors for each project and credits every article to one of them.
Set up your own byline
Your own byline comes from your profile, so you only fill it in once.
- Click your name in the top-right corner and choose Profile.
- Check your Display name and add a photo with Upload photo.
- Under Author byline, fill in:
- Job title / credentials, for example "Founder & Head of Product".
- Bio: a few sentences for the author box.
- Profile links: your LinkedIn, X or other professional profiles. Click Add link for each one. They're added to the article's structured data, so search engines can connect the article to you.
- Click Save.
Changes to your profile update your byline on every article credited to you.
Who is credited
- Articles you create are credited to you.
- Articles written by auto-articles are credited to the publication's Default author. Set it in Settings → your publication → Writing → Default author. Choose No author (anonymous) to publish them without a byline.
Change the author of an article
The byline sits at the bottom of the article in the editor, under Written by.
- Click Change (or Set author if nobody is credited yet).
- Pick an author from the list. Your own entry is marked You.
From the same list you can also:
- Remove author to publish the article without a byline.
- Add guest author to credit someone who doesn't use ProjectHQ, such as an outside expert. Fill in the Name, Role / credentials, Short bio, photo and Profile links, then click Create.
- Manage authors to open the full list of authors.
Manage all authors
Go to Settings → Project → Authors.
- Add author creates a new author with a Name, Role / credentials, Short bio, Photo and Profile links.
- The pencil icon edits an author. The bin deletes one. Articles credited to a deleted author lose their byline.
Keep the details specific and truthful. "Head of SEO, 10 years in B2B SaaS" says more than "Writer".
Where the byline appears
The author's name, role, bio, photo and profile links travel with the article when it's published. How they're shown depends on where you publish. See Publish to your website.
Tip: The Authoritativeness part of an article's content health score takes the byline into account. An article without an author scores lower.
