Log events on a timeline

Log launches, redesigns and other changes in Events so you can tell why your traffic or rankings moved.

Traffic jumped on Tuesday — was it the new landing page, the Google update, or the newsletter? Events is a simple timeline where you note launches, redesigns, migrations and other changes. ProjectHQ draws them as flags on your charts, so weeks later you can still tell why your rankings or traffic moved.

Add an event

  1. Open Events in the menu and click Add event.
  2. Fill in the Add New Event form:
    • Title — what happened, for example Launched the new pricing page.
    • Event Date — today by default. Pick the day it happened; future dates aren't available.
    • Description (Optional) — a line of detail.
    • URL (Optional) — a link to the page, release notes or announcement.
  3. Click Create Event.

Your timeline

Events are listed newest first and grouped by month. If an event has a URL, Read more opens it.

To change an event, click the pencil next to it, edit the fields in Edit Event and click Save Changes. To remove one, click the bin and confirm with Delete event — this can't be undone.

See events on your charts

Each event appears as a flag on the date it happened:

  • on the Rank Tracker charts — the small summary charts and the large chart you get when you click one, and on the Competitor Analysis charts;
  • on the traffic chart in Analytics.

Rank Tracker checks positions every few days, so its charts only have a point on the days of a check. An event that falls between two checks is drawn at the nearest one, and its tooltip shows the real date. An event newer than the latest check appears once the next check is in.

Hover over a flag's date to see what happened that day next to the numbers:

What's worth logging

Kind of event Examples
Product launches A new feature, a pricing change, a new landing page.
Site changes A redesign, a migration to a new host or CMS, changed URLs or navigation.
SEO work Rewritten titles, a batch of fixes from the site audit, new internal links.
Content A new article series, turning on autopilot.
Outside events A Google algorithm update, press coverage, a big campaign or newsletter.

Tip: Log the event on the day the change went live, not the day you planned it. A flag one week off makes the chart harder to read, not easier.
